childbirth classes, reimagined
-
i firmly believe that the more informed we are throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, the better the outcomes for everyone in the entire family.
i aim to fill what i see as a gap in existing offerings with my fully customized perinatal education series. it’s so much more than just a “childbirth class”—it is an individualized journey through the stages and realities of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum parenthood.
the series will cover a wide variety of topics, including but not limited to: anatomy, choosing a care provider & facility, consent in pregnancy & birth, preparing your home for baby, choices in childbirth, labor strategies, Cesarean birth education, newborn care, maternal mental health, and respectful/gentle parenting guidance.
each series will be tailor-made for its participants so that everyone–someone expecting twins, someone becoming a single mother by choice, someone without any family/friends nearby for postpartum support, someone experiencing pregnancy after multiple losses, someone choosing home birth–will receive the information most relevant to and useful for their journey.
all partners/support people will be invited and encouraged to fully participate in the series, again because birth is not an isolated event—it is vital for those closest to mother & baby to be hands-on and involved, to learn how to best nurture, support, and celebrate them throughout pregnancy, labor & delivery, and all the seasons that follow.

in the 11 years since i became a mother and 9 years since i became a doula, i’ve been hard-pressed to find a childbirth class i’d recommend to expectant families.
most traditional childbirth classes available to women and their partner/support person take place more than halfway through pregnancy and focus mainly on what to expect during vaginal labor and birth of a single baby in a medicalized setting. some facilities and organizations also offer newborn care classes, a crash course on early parenthood with topics usually ranging from how to change diapers and bathe the baby to when to know to call the pediatrician for medical help. the best of these offerings will also provide information on signs and symptoms of postpartum blues, depression, and/or psychosis and the support available for them.
these offerings are not enough. labor and delivery do not occur in a vacuum–they are the final act of pregnancy and the first act of motherhood & parenthood. we shouldn’t only be informed about the positions and choices we make while in labor, but also about how we have the power to set the tone and mood both within ourselves and the environment around us to ensure a safe and healthy transition to motherhood. what’s more, every single birth is different—each one involves different people, bodies, medical histories, desires, and circumstances. as such, when we learn about how to best prepare for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum parenthood, we should specifically learn in ways that matter to us individually.
